CONQUERING HALF DOME: MORE THAN JUST A HIKE

Seven Years, One Dream, and One Unforgettable Summit.

(17 miles round trip - 5100 feet of elevation gain - one BIG granite mountain to the summit!)

Some dreams never leave us. They simply wait for the right moment.
Seven years ago, a picture of Half Dome in Yosemite National Park sparked something in me. I had never been to Yosemite, but I knew one thing for certain: someday, I wanted to stand on top of that mountain.

It wasn’t just a passing thought. Half Dome became a dream that stayed with me year after year. I even purchased a beautiful piece of wall art featuring Half Dome and hung it next to my bed. Every day, there it was.  A reminder of a place I had never visited and a mountain I was determined to climb. I didn’t know when or how I would make it happen. I just knew that someday, I would.

Fast-forward nearly seven years. Life has a funny way of surprising us.
I met a wonderful man in Denver who had relocated from Kentucky. He was an avid hiker, backpacker, and outdoorsman who shared my love for adventure. Just a few weeks into dating, he learned about my longtime dream of summiting Half Dome. What happened next brought me to tears of joy. I could hardly believe it was happening. He surprised me by booking a trip to Yosemite nine months in advance, complete with a glamping adventure and plans to summit Half Dome together.

Suddenly, a dream I had carried for seven years had a date on the calendar!
The dream was becoming real. Now it was time to get to work. I knew Half Dome wasn’t going to be an ordinary hike, and I wasn’t about to show up unprepared. For nine months, I attended spin class four days a week. I was determined to build the strength and endurance I would need. On the weekends, we hit the trails together, tackling long hikes that challenged me and pushed me to become stronger. I trained harder than I ever had for a hiking adventure. Every spin class, every uphill climb, and every mile was preparing me for that one incredible day. I wasn’t simply hoping I could make it to the top. I was doing everything I could to make sure I would.

(The climbs before the climb)

Then came May 2026. Yosemite National Park.
I’ll never forget driving into the park and seeing Half Dome in person for the very first time. For seven years, I had looked at that mountain in a picture hanging next to my bed. I thought I knew what to expect. I was wrong! Seeing Half Dome towering above the landscape was intimidating! It was massive, far more imposing than I had ever imagined. I remember looking up at it and realizing, I’m actually going to climb THAT?  For the first time, the enormity of what I had set out to accomplish really hit me. I had spent nine months preparing for this moment, and I wasn’t turning back. The day of the climb had finally arrived. This was the day I had dreamed about for nearly seven years. The mountain was every bit as magnificent and challenging as I had imagined, but something happened that made the experience even more rewarding. I was ready. All those early mornings at spin class, all those weekends hiking, all those months of pushing myself physically had paid off. I was in incredible shape, and I could feel it. I powered through that hike with a strength and determination that made me proud of myself. Not only was I accomplishing a dream, but I was discovering just how capable I had become.
I wasn’t simply surviving the climb. I was conquering it. After seven years of dreaming and nine months of preparation, I reached the summit of Half Dome!

I DID IT!
Even now, I struggle to put into words what that moment felt like. Standing on top of that magnificent mountain, looking out over Yosemite, knowing everything it had taken to get there was almost overwhelming. I felt joy, pride, gratitude, and an incredible sense of accomplishment. What made me especially proud wasn’t just reaching the summit - It was how I reached it.

I had committed myself to a goal, worked incredibly hard, and arrived physically prepared to take on one of the biggest challenges of my life. I didn’t just climb Half Dome. I conquered Half Dome!

Looking back, I realize the summit was only part of the reward.

The journey itself was something special. Seven years of dreaming, nine months of dedication, countless miles of hiking, and a wonderful man who believed in my dream enough to make it an adventure we could share. When I started this story, I wasn’t sure whether Half Dome had been a dream or a goal.

Now I know.
It started as a dream. It became a goal and in May 2026, it became one of the proudest accomplishments of my life. That picture of Half Dome still means the world to me. Now, when I look at it, I don’t see a mountain I hope to climb someday. I see a mountain that once intimidated me. A mountain that challenged me. A mountain that inspired me to become stronger than I ever imagined.

I see a mountain I conquered.  I smile.
Sometimes the greatest reward isn’t just reaching the summit. It’s discovering what you’re capable of along the way.

(The Day After:  Still smiling, still overwhelmed with joy, and now looking at Half Dome knowing I had conquered it! )
